Old St. Ferdinand, a Shrine to St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, is located in Florissant, Missouri. The Shrine is at the site of one of the earliest European settlements west of the Mississippi and was home to St. Rose Philippine Duchesne for many years.

The St. Ferdinand parish was established in 1789. For a number of years a log church served the community until the original portion of the existing church was constructed in 1821.

The convent was built in 1819, and Mass was said in its chapel for the first time on Christmas Eve of that year.

November 18 is the Feast Day of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne. Sometimes schools and parishes are looking for specific readings or prayers for this Feast Day.

This Year of Prayer celebrates the missionary journey of Philippine Duchesne and her four companions from France to the New World, thus beginning the internationality of the Society of the Sacred Heart, now in 41 countries. 

Sister Barbara Dawson, our Superior General, and her Council have invited the whole family of the Sacred Heart to enter the Year of Prayer, to be and to act as one Body, and to create space and silence to listen to the heartbeat of God. What a wonderful way to celebrate Philippine Duchesne, known affectionately as “the woman who prays always.”
