A Marathon of the Heart: Sister Osiek presents in Japan

November 15, 2024

Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, gave 22 different presentations and talks to Religious of the Sacred Heart and lay collaborators during a 2 week visit to Japan this past fall.

Her presentations varied in topic, including on Sacred Heart Spirituality, Mater and the new museum at the Villa Lante in Rome. The Japan province’s continuing education committee invited Sister Osiek to the province, anticipating her visit for the better part of a year.

For the first two days of adjustment, she visited sites in Tokyo with Shell Olson, RSCJ. Then she hit the ground running, offering eight presentations at a weekend workshop on Sacred Heart Spirituality. She gave her presentations in a hybrid format, with attendees and viewers from Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

Sister Osiek had the opportunity to visit and present at the International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo, where Anne Wachter, RSCJ, currently serves as head of school. She also gave a presentation on Mater to faculty and staff from the nearby University of the Sacred Heart.

Later, Sister Osiek accompanied 17 RSCJ for a five-day retreat in Susono during which she presented twice a day. Sister Osiek noted “on a clear day in Susono you can see Mt. Fuji.” She also visited Sacred Heart School at Susono, where she presented to about 480 students from grades 7-12.

She returned to Tokyo and, drawing on her extensive background in archival work, Sister Osiek met with Japan Province archives staff to learn about their operations and answer any of their questions.

When asked about what it meant to share her knowledge and understanding of the Sacred Heart with so many, Sister Osiek shared, “I feel like a vehicle for the charism of the Society, a means for good things happening. I let it flow.”

Sister Osiek most recently served as provincial archivist for the United States – Canada (USC) Province for the past 14 years, and recently changed roles to assist the provincial team with special projects at the USC provincial office in St. Louis, Missouri.
