The Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, Missouri, was the first free school west of the Mississippi River when it opened in 1818. A story about the school and its foundress - Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne - was recently featured in the Mid Rivers Newsmagazine, published for St. Charles County.
