Celebrating Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, a pioneer missionary of the Society of the Sacred Heart, who came to St. Charles, Missouri, from France and founded the first free school west of the Mississippi in September 1818.

Philippine is pictured here during her journey to America aboard the Rebecca. This was an arduous journey, during which Philippine slept outside their small room so that her companions would have the more comfortable bed.

Mother Nealis was a well-known painter, particularly of holy cards and other religious paintings. This painting resides at Sacred Heart School of Halifax.
