Louise Callan, RSCJ (1893-1966): Historian and Biographer of Philippine Duchesne by Carolyn Osick, RSCJ, is available for purchase in print and as an ebook. Louise Callan, RSCJ, was professor of history and sacred scripture at Maryville College in St. Louis, Missouri, until her death in 1966. She was greatly loved by her many Maryville students.
As we enter into the winter season, a time when the earth lies fallow in colder climates, our contributors to the winter issue of Heart focus on the connection and responsibility of each one of us to our common home, the earth. We invite you to take this issue of Heart “to heart” and respond to the call of Pope Francis to make the care of our common home a personal call.
Thank you to our many friends and benefactors who share the Society of the Sacred Heart’s mission of making God’s love known in the heart of the world. The Mission Advancement annual report, Hearts on Fire, embracing the future with hope, is an expression of the life lived in the past year. We are grateful to all of you for making this future possible.
The spring issue of Heart is just the antidote to the stories of violence and cruelty that we hear on the news each day. It is full of stories of leadership and love that tell how the Good News overcomes the darkness that is so present in our world today. It gives us great hope is to know that these are just a few of the many stories of commitment to revealing God’s love in concrete ways that we can find among our Sacred Heart family. Please spend some time with it and let us know what you think.
As the Catholic Church begins the Year of Consecrated Life, this issue of Heart magazine celebrates the many ways Religious of the Sacred Heart are called to live a consecrated life. As Provincial Barbara Dawson writes in her letter:
Our province is blessed that so many friends and benefactors share our response to God’s call and feel compelled to respond with a generous heart. The winter issue of Heart magazine highlights the legacy of Janet Erskine Stuart. Mother Stuart (1857-1914) was the sixth superior general of the Society of the Sacred Heart, serving in that position from 1911 to 1914. She was a prolific writer, known in particular for her book The Education of Catholic Girls. The Society of the Sacred Heart and schools of the Sacred Heart around the world are observing the centennary of her death from October 2013 to October 2014.
The spring 2013 issue of Heart focuses on the most essential element of St. Madeleine Sophie’s gift to our world, our church and to us who are connected because of her, the Call to Contemplation.
