In the fall of 2021, I participated in a day offered to women religious of the Diocese of San Diego focused on ministries of direct service to people on the move — migrants and refugees at the United States–Mexico border in Southern California. I was deeply touched hearing about the variety of ministries done by sisters and began to look at ways to get involved after moving to San Diego.

Religious of the Sacred Heart, Raphaelle “Kaye” Elizabeth Cherry died on May 31, 2024, in Atherton, California. She was 88 years old and a religious for 64 years. Raphaelle, known as “Kaye” was born on October 11, 1935, in New York City, to James R. Cherry and Kathryn Johnston Cherry. She was one of two children, growing up with a brother. Kaye graduated in 1953 from Sacred Heart Greenwich. She went on to Manhattanville College earning degrees in English, a B.A in 1957 and an M.A in 1966.

Religious of the Sacred Heart, Angela “Angie” Lucy Bayo died on May 28, 2024, in Albany, New York. She was 97 years old and a religious for 75 years. Angie was born on July 29, 1926, in New York, New York, to Louis G. Bayo and Angela H. Bayo. She was one of three children, growing up with a sister and a brother. Angie graduated in 1944 from Convent of the Sacred Heart, Maplehurst, in the Bronx. The school relocated in 1945 to Greenwich, Connecticut, and is known today as Sacred Heart Greenwich.

Religious of the Sacred Heart, Mary Patricia “Pat” Geuting died on May 23, 2024, in Atherton, California. She was 89 years old and a religious for 65 years. Pat was born on December 24, 1934, in Darby, Pennsylvania, to Joseph Thomas Geuting, Jr., and Helena Mary Raskob Geuting. She grew up with a sister and a brother. She came to know the Society of the Sacred Heart when she attended Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating in 1952. She graduated from Manhattanville College in 1956 with a B.A. in Psychology.
