I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;

I will remove from you your heart of stone

and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26

In this time of change, of loss, of grief, of hope
of tragedy, of violence, of new birth, of “can’t go back”
of saying good-bye, and making space, of listening twice as much as we speak,
of not being in charge and being willing to step up…

In this time
 has your heart of stone given way
To a new heart
A new spirit
Discovering the heart of flesh
in the most unexpected places…

My husband and I were volunteering a few weeks ago at the San Francisco food bank pop-ups. As we were assembling hundreds of bags of food with many other volunteers, the line – three blocks long – never depleted for a moment. This photo shows a potato that I grabbed out of the huge bag.

To me, it is a heart! It made me smile. Indeed, God's love is everywhere.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;

I will remove from you your heart of stone

and give you a heart of flesh.
