Flat Philippine

Using the concept of Flat Stanley, a children’s book from 1964 about a boy who becomes flat and can be mailed around the world, Flat Philippine was designed as a fun way to share the story of Philippine around the world!

In the Flat Stanley children’s books, Stanley travels the world in envelopes. Students who read the books send the paper doll and written notes to students in other parts of the world through conventional mail and e-mail. Children exchange ideas, photographs, questions and culture with students overseas.

Old St. Ferdinand, A Shrine to St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

Old St. Ferdinand, a Shrine to St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, is located in Florissant, Missouri. The Shrine is at the site of one of the earliest European settlements west of the Mississippi and was home to St. Rose Philippine Duchesne for many years.

The St. Ferdinand parish was established in 1789. For a number of years a log church served the community until the original portion of the existing church was constructed in 1821.

The convent was built in 1819, and Mass was said in its chapel for the first time on Christmas Eve of that year.

Bicentennial Prayer

Spirit of the living God,
you first breathed over the waters of creation,
and one day you breathed a passion
into the heart of Philippine Duchesne.
You called her to cross the waters to a New World,
to bring the message of your compassion and love
to a land and peoples already dear to your heart.

Bicentennial Year of Prayer

November 18, 2017 (all day)

This Year of Prayer celebrates the missionary journey of Philippine Duchesne and her four companions from France to the New World, thus beginning the internationality of the Society of the Sacred Heart, now in 41 countries.

Sister Barbara Dawson, our Superior General, and her Council have invited the whole family of the Sacred Heart to enter the Year of Prayer, to be and to act as one Body, and to create space and silence to listen to the heartbeat of God. What a wonderful way to celebrate Philippine Duchesne, known affectionately as “the woman who prays always.”

Mass in Honor of Rose Philippine Duchesne

To celebrate the bicentennial of Philippine’s arrival, the Religious of the Sacred Heart commissioned Father Michael Joncas to compose the Duchesne Mass: to give praise and thanksgiving to God, to join the Sacred Heart family across the world in prayer, to make Philippine better known and loved, and to offer a lasting gift to the musical repertoire of the Church.
