Statement of Solidarity

June 12, 2017

As Religious of the Sacred Heart in the United States – Canada Province, we are called by our recent Chapter Documents to stand in solidarity with “those who have been wounded, displaced, and excluded because of poverty, violence, and environmental degradation.”

The recent decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Accord and to stop future payments to the Green Climate Fund compels us to add our voice to the growing chorus of people of good will from around the world who are deeply concerned about the negative impact this will have both locally and globally. In particular we agree with the statement released by Catholic Climate Covenant and signed by the leadership of LCWR and Catholic Charities and many others. This press release refers to the efforts made by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to encourage this Administration to honor the Paris Climate Accords and draws the connection between Catholic Social Teachings and the obligation to protect the environment.

The Religious of the Sacred Heart in the United States – Canada Province share Pope Francis's vision of a world in which all countries work together to protect our common home. We commit ourselves to doing all in our power to incorporate this vision into our lives and ministries.
