Feast of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat reflection

Despite growing up in St. Charles, Missouri, and attending the Academy of the Sacred Heart where Saint Philippine is buried, I always felt closer to the Society of the Sacred Heart’s founding mother, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. It was at Sacred Heart that I first came to care about my faith, after seeing the joy on the face of one of the RSCJ there as she prayed during a school Mass. It inspired me to try to pray, quieting myself and listening closely, letting myself sink deeper and deeper into God’s love.

New provincial team announced

In January 2021, the Society of the Sacred Heart General Council completed its discernment in choosing the next provincial of the United States – Canada Province.

Religious of the Sacred Heart, Karen Olson died May 18, 2021, in Albany, New York. She was eighty-four years old and a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart for sixty-two years. Karen was born in Syracuse, New York, on April 22, 1937, the only daughter of Axel Gotric Olson and Madeleine Byrne Olson. Her early education was at the Convents of the Sacred Heart, 91st Street, in New York City, and Kenwood in Albany, New York. She graduated from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart with a B.A. in Biology in 1958 and an M.A. in Education in 1966.

Mary McGann, RSCJ, receives 2021 GTU Excellence in Teaching Award

The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is pleased to announce that Dr. Mary E. McGann, RSCJ, adjunct associate professor of liturgical studies at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, is the recipient of the 2021 GTU Excellence in Teaching Award.

United States – Canada Province endorses National Black Sisters Conference and LCWR statement on voting rights

The National Black Sisters Conference, together with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), have released a statement on the critical importance of ensuring that all people – no matter race, zip code, economic situation – enjoy the sacred right to vote. The Society of the Sacred Heart United States – Canada Province supports and endorses this statement, as well as the May 8th John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Action Day mentioned in the statement.

Kate Steigerwald, as I knew her, was one of those students with whom every educator would love to share life – generous, sparkling, totally comfortable in her own skin, full of questions to expand the boundaries of her faith, and ready to champion whatever cause or person was under-appreciated or misrepresented. My heart rejoiced when she landed in her vocation as a nurse and celebrated as she and Brandon Movitz made a lifetime commitment in marriage.

Associated Alumnae & Alumni of the Sacred Heart (AASH) has named Frances (Fran) Gimber, RSCJ, and Carolyn (Lyn) Osiek, RSCJ, honorees of the 2021 Woman of Conscience Award. Both women will be honored during this years’ AASH National Conference held virtually April 22-25.

The Society of the Sacred Heart is united in solidarity with all people fleeing their homes in search of a life free of oppression, marginalization, human rights violations and poverty. We fully endorse the statement from the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) calling upon the Biden Administration to fulfill its promise to increase the number of refugees resettled in the United States to 62,500 this fiscal year.
